It's quite obvious that the purpose of this platform is to emphasize speaking skills. As the founder of this application says, they hope to increase access to education, employment opportunities and better life by helping people break down spoken language barriers. Therefore, this tool is highly language-oriented.
Foster speaking skills in my context
As a teacher, this tool is acting as teaching assistance which does a big favour. Although the features of Speechling make it impossible to be used in the classroom because learners have to wait for the feedback, the instructor can assign it as homework for students to use it practice speaking every day.
In addition, this tool particularly fits introverted students. As they feel shy about practising speaking in public places, the human coach is like an audience who listen to them but doesn't put any stress on speakers because it's not a face-to-face conversation between speaker and listener.
Limitation
😭 Limited tutoring for free users
Though it's happy to enjoy all services for free, learners can only upload recordings and receive feedback ten times every month. Intensive practice can only realize when you upgrade to premium.
😭 Limited recording time (also for free users)
Again, the time for recording is very limited for free users, which is around 8 seconds or so. Premium users can have 20 seconds for each recording, which means they can have more content corrected by the native tutor.
😭 The feedback normally focuses on the basic level
According to Speechling, their tutors mainly correct word pronunciation, intonation and word choice. For example, one of my feedback pointed out my pronunciation of the sound of 'w' in the word 'reward' that shouldn't be like the sound of 'v'. Thus, if some learners are already mastered basic pronunciation and looking for advanced expressions, then other tools are needed to be considered.
