'Quizlet' You Review Anytime

What's special about 'Quizlet'??

Why 'Quizlet'??

Well, 'flashcards' design is the most remarkable and impressive feature of this tool, which often shows in different parts of pages.

Just like a tick makes you think of 'Nike', a lightning scar remind you of 'Harry Potter', and 'flashcards' always do with memorizing English vocabulary back in school.

That's why 'Quizlet' is relevant to language learning.

Who says flashcards are only for memorizing words??

What else it can do?

Don't forget the name of this tool carries the word 'quiz'. In this case, flashcards can be used to design various kinds of quizzes.

Individual-centered

1. Grammar-translation Approach

Since this approach emphasizes the correct use of grammar and regardless of context, one can create gap fill quizzes to assist in learning or reviewing grammar.

2. Audiolingual Approach
It's a wise choice to make full use of the audio function of electronic flashcards. By giving instruction on one side of the card to ask learners repeatedly listen to the audio of a dialogue attached on the other side, learners are able to form a speaking linguistic habit.

Collaborative-centred

So far these tasks are done by individuals. However, the competitive quiz game in this tool is a booster of classroom language teaching, which enables learners to collaborate closely with one another. It's useful to foster language learning effectiveness in the classroom by controlling the way students discuss to some extent when it is embedded in the lesson. This is my favourite function in 'Quizlet'.
1. It underpins interaction between learners through setting up RANDAM groups to compete with the other groups. Everyone in the class would have the chance to work with someone they never cooperate with.
2. Students in a group of course need to conduct an intensive discussion because ONLY one of them has the correct answer to the question. If they solely look at their own phones, it won't help their team win.
3. As soon as a team get an answer wrong, they have to be back to square one and restart the quiz. This imply students should discuss very CAREFULLY

Limitations

1. Generally it couldn't get out of the pattern of rote learning, so it is INFLEXIBLE
No matter what kind of quiz is provided for students, they need to memorize the messages on the flashcards because those messages are assumed to be the correct answer to any quizzes.

2. The layout is simple rather than colourful, so in my view, this software might not attract young learners. However, it is not a big problem.

Comments

  1. Yes, I agree with you that it is inflexible. It is only for remembering vocabulary. And the answer is only one for each question. Users could not share thoughts. Maybe it will be more suitable for young learners and users can get bored quickly.

  4. Wow, Cuilin

It is really awe-inspiring. I love the Q & A style you used in writing it.

You introduces the approaches a teacher can use with Quizlet, which is really good.

What I like the most is the idea of comparing the individual and the collaborative learning comparison in use you drew. It is amazing!

    Great post!

  5. Hi Cullin, I can't believe I've missed this post! It was exciting for me to try Quizlet for the first time, but then soon I felt bored about the limited simple teaching/learning style. This is the limitation you've seen as well, so we had same opinion! We, as teachers, might use this tool couple of times, but for now , it seems we need to prepare alternatives as well. Thanks! See you next week!
